I’m new to this. So I don’t pretend to be an expert. But in the months since my transition from working full-time outside the home to being a full-time work at home mom, I admit, I’ve learned a few things. If this is something you’ve considered doing or if you’re already many years into it and still feel a little lost, I hope that a few of these lessons I’ve learned the hard way will be of help to you. And please, share your advice. I’d love to know your tips for making it happen your way.
Tip #1: Get Help
For anyone who’s ever been through a layoff, you know how horrible it is. More often than not, you know it’s coming. Or at least you know people are getting laid off, but you don’t think it’ll be you. I mean, you’re totally vital to the organization. You worked on a great project a few months ago that produced stellar results. You’re the nicest person on the team, always bringing snacks! And you actually speak up and say intelligent things in meetings, whereas Rachel, well, she’s a disaster. You’re still thinking all these things when you’re motioned into that little room. As you sit down you’re wondering whether they’re just going to tell you about your new role now that so many people have been let go. Then you focus your attention on the table and there’s a packet sitting there with a cover sheet featuring an image of a really happy looking, racially-ambiguous woman holding a stack of papers; the title of the document is, “So, You’re Looking For Employment?” Then you look around the room and everyone looks really sad. And you realize it’s happening. You’re being laid off. And then you start to ugly cry.
